The Ballet Center will perform “The Nutcracker” on Saturday, Dec. 17, at 7 p.m. at Barrington High School on Lincoln Avenue. The holiday classic is a children’s production for children and directed by Garance Nienhuis. The cast of local ballet students is from all over the East Bay and Aquidneck Island and ranges in age from 5 to 17.

“The Nutcracker” will be presented complete with a new, growing Christmas tree created by local artist John Paul Fernandes, a Mother Ginger with Ginger Cookies who appear from under her skirt, dancing flowers and candy canes, a beautiful Sugar Plum Fairy and a Mouse Queen who rocks the house.

This production has adapted the “battle scene,” the goal being not to scare young audience members, but to have them laugh at the silly mice. Ophelia Fernandes of Riverside is the Sugar Plum Fairy and Tianna Murgo of Bristol is the Snow Queen Doll. The role of Clara, the little girl who receives the nutcracker, will be danced by Jade McMahon of Portsmouth, and Frau Drosselmeyer will be portrayed by Francesca Bernardo of Barrington.

It is the goal of The Ballet Center to offer all local ballet students the opportunity to dance in a full-length ballet.

Tickets are available at the door. The cost is $15 for adults and $10 for children under 12. Doors open 30 minutes before curtain. Tickets also can be reserved by calling 254-2847.
