An accident on the Mount Hope Bridge Wednesday evening sent several people to the hospital and caused standstill traffic in both Bristol and Portsmouth.
The two-car accident occurred at 5:34 p.m. on the Bristol side of the bridge when a car headed toward Portsmouth veered into oncoming traffic, said R.I State Police Captain Ernest Quarry.
The vehicle, driven by James Lavier, 68, of Bristol, struck a northbound vehicle with several passengers, including children, he said.
The children were all transported to Hasbro Children’s Hospital as a precautionary measure, while driver Hope Loman, 26, of Warren, and a 28-year-old male passenger went to Rhode Island Hospital, he said.
Mr. Lavier was transported to Newport Hospital with minor injuries.
It is unclear what caused Mr. Lavier to veer out of his lane, causing what Capt. Quarry said was not quite a head-on collision.
Troopers from the Portsmouth State Police Barracks and officers from Bristol responded.
Traffic came to a standstill on either side of the bridge during the cleanup. The last of the two vehicles, an SUV, was towed from the scene at about 7 p.m.
