PROVIDENCE — Team titles in the four girls’ high school indoor track and field divisional championship meets held Saturday, Feb. 4, at the Providence Career & Tech Academy Fieldhouse went to Toll Gate in the Bayha bracket; Hope in Sullivan; LaSalle in Headley and local entry Portsmouth in the Dwyer Division.

The Patriots scored in every event as they avenged the loss of the regular season dual meet title to East Providence to claim the Dwyer meet crown.

Likewise, Hope got the better of Mt. Hope for the Sullivan Division title after the Bristol-based Huskies won the regular season dual meet championship.

In the Headley Division, LaSalle continued the same trend, topping a Classical team that had won the dual meet title. Local entry Barrington placed third.

Meet Notes

Of significance was Royal Cheatham’s performance in the Sullivan Division 55-meter dash. The Blue Wave senior clocked 6.9 seconds (hand-held) in winning the event. The longstanding R.I. indoor girls’ dash mark is 7.15 (FAT), held by Hope’s Pam Hughes since 1985. However, Track & Field News, which maintains the records, requires that all performances under 400 meters be timed electronically to qualify as a new mark. Even so, since Cheatam’s hand-held clocking, when converted to FAT, is an unofficial 7.14, it’s clear that the Hope senior is on the bubble to break Hughes’ record.

This season, Cheatham has already flirted with Hughes’ standard. She clocked 7.17 (FAT) at last month’s Rhody Invitational on URI‘s new Mondo surface track. At the Sullivan meet on Saturday, Cheatham clocked a hand-held 7.2 in both the preliminary round and in the semi-finals.

More highlights

Cheatham also had the best long jump mark of the day (four divisional meets) with a winning distance of 18 feet, 0.75 inches (5.50 meters). A barnburner in the 1500 meters came in the Headley Division meet, where Classical’s Maddy Berkson and La Salle’s Madison Meehan battled for the finish tape; it was Berkson in a time of 4:39.4 to Meehan’s 4:42.4. Except for a marked improvement in their times over the past year, the Headley Division race was a rematch of the 2011 State Indoor Championship 1500, which pitted freshman Berkson against Meehan, a junior at the time. Berkson’s 4:52.69 bested Meehan’s 4:53.61. In the Headley run, the two champions were, through most of the race, no more than a half-stride apart, until Berkson opened it up at the bell. Portsmouth senior Becky Cousens helped the Patriots’ team cause by winning the Dwyer Division 20-pound weight throw. Cousens’ mark was 39-2.75 (11.96 meters) . . . Westerly High’s Jackie Burr looked strong in taking the Bayha Division 1500. The Bulldog sophomore won handily in 5:01.1. Burr placed second in the Bayha 1000 (3:17.2).
