Volunteers sought for Literacy Volunteers

New tutor training to begin Thursday, Jan. 12

Literacy Volunteers of East Bay is in need of volunteers who would like to make a difference in the life of an adult learner. Literacy Volunteers provides free 1-1 tutoring or small group instruction to area adults, helping them with reading, writing, math and/or English-speaking skills.

In addition, they provide support for students who are enrolled in GED programs. Classes to prepare for citizenship classes also are available.

Volunteer tutors attend a 15-hour interactive training session to learn tutoring techniques and best practices for working with adult learners. Upon completion of the training, tutors are matched with a student. Together they determine a mutually convenient time and place to meet for two hours per week. Coordinators provide ongoing help to both students and tutors.

The next tutor training is at Roger Williams University in Bristol in the North Classroom Building, Room 104,. It is from 6 to 8:30 p.m. Thursdays, Jan. 12 to Feb. 2, and from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 21. Call 401/247-2177 to register. Visit their website at www.lveastbay.org to learn more.
