Boys State gearing up for new year

To the editor:

I am a representative of the American Legion’s Boys State Program and would like to announce that our program is gearing up for a new session that will run from June 17 through June 22 at Roger Williams University.

This program is open to students that have completed their junior year of high school throughout the state of Rhode Island. The program centers around the understanding of our democratic system, as the students become part of the legislative process, electing officials, preparing bills to be presented at a mock senate session at the house chambers in Providence on Thursday of that week. The students elect their governing body of a governor, lt. governor, treasurer, attorney general, and secretary of state.

At the closing of the program, two students that will have been selected by the class as the most outstanding students will go to Washington, DC in July to represent Rhode Island in the Legion’s national program Boys’ Nation.

This program is free to all that apply, but due to cost, our selection will be limited to 35 students this year. If you are interested in applying, please contact your school’s guidance department for further information or e-mail me at dave_riboysstate@verizon.net
