Alda (Couto) Mello, 96, of 91 Burton St., Bristol, died Monday, Feb. 6, 2012, at Rhode Island Hospital, Providence. She was the wife of the late Christian O. Mello.
Born in Bristol and a resident for most of her life, she was a daughter of the late Joseph P. and Yolande (Medeiros) Couto.
She was a stitcher at the former Bristol Manufacturing Co. in Bristol and the former Well Made Dresses in Warren for a number of years. She was a communicant of St. Elizabeth’s Church, Bristol, a member of the Holy Rosary Sodality and the former Legion of Mary at the church, and a member of the Miraculous Medal Association.
She is survived by six children, Uzelle M. Sylvia of Bristol, Paula E. Brelsford of East Providence, Eloise A. Bassett of Swansea, Ruth E. Reavey of Johnston, Jerome R. Mello of Bristol, and Russell J. Mello of Warren; three sisters, Jilda C. Page and Emma C. Mello, both of Warren, and Alice Szczepanck of Tiverton; a brother, Albert Couto of Taunton, 14 grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren. In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by a great-grandson, Heath McEachern, and three brothers, James, George and Joseph Couto.
Funeral services will be held on Feb. 11 at 9 a.m. from the Sansone Funeral Home, 192 Wood St., Bristol, with a Mass of Christian burial at 10 a.m. in St. Elizabeth’s Church, 577 Wood St., Bristol. Burial will follow in St. Mary’s Cemetery, Chestnut Street, Bristol. Visiting hours are 4 to 6 p.m. on Friday.
