Retired Police Chief Samuel R. Correia, 87, of North Port, Fla. and Warren, R.I., passed away Saturday, Jan. 21, 2012, at home. He was the husband of Frances Correia, his wife of 65 years.
Born in Warren on June 13, 1924, he was a son of the late Sergio and Frances Correia, and had lived in Lazy River Village for 29 years. He served in the United States Navy in World War II, and graduated from Salve Regina College and the FBI Academy in Quantico, Va. He was a past President of the Fraternal Order of Police, past Exalted Ruler of the Bristol County Elks, an active member of the Englewood Elks, a member of the Rhode Island Police Chiefs Association, a member of C.P.O.A. of Rhode Island, the American Legion Post 104, the VFW Post 8203, the D.A.V. the AmVets, and was the senior member of the Narragansett Fire Company, Engine 3. From 1946 to 1947 he was a member of the Providence Steamrollers, now known as the New England Patriots.
Besides his wife, he leaves three children, William (Marilyn), Bruce and Nancy (Steve) Diemoz; six grandchildren, John (Valerie), Connie, Brian, Jason, Brandon and Marc (Sarah) Federico; and a great-granddaughter, Gianna. He was the last of a family of seven brothers and sisters, Henry, Eddie, Beatrice, Joe, Winky and Jim.
Arrangements are with Smith Funeral & Memorial Services, 8 School House Road, Warren, where family will receive friends from 4 to 7 p.m., Thursday, Jan. 26, 2012. Funeral services begin at 8 a.m. Friday, Feb. 27, from the funeral home, with a Mass at 9 a.m. in St Alexander’s Church, 221 Main St., Warren. Burial will be private. See wjsmithfh.com
